WEBINAR ON PANDEMIC LITERATURE: 01/08/2020
On August 1st, the English Department of Sacred Heart College conducted a webinar on "Pandemic Literature" putting forward the immense cultural impact literature has in these changing times . This auspicious occasion started with a prayer by Meghna K Nair (2nd ug), followed by Catherine Shaju's (2nd pg) welcome of the group which commenced the webinar. An official insight to this unique initiative was put forward by the moderator, Dr. Rajesh M and a few words from the wise, Dr. Rohit P addressed the students, sharing views on the endless genres and classics in literature. The paper presentations started off with Merin Rose's (2nd pg) illustration on how " The Plague" by Camus fit into the genre of pandemic literature and how the story is expressed from the point of view of an unknown narrator as he witnessed the plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran. Athira C.H (2nd pg) later explained the significance of pandemic literature in Chaucerian period followed by Merlin Mary (3rd ug) who used the aid of a Power Point presentation to demonstrate the the theories and content of "The Ghost Map" by Steven Berlin Johnson which told the story of the 1854 outbreak of cholera in Broad Street, London. The paper presentation wound up with a final presentation on the Steven Soderbergh movie "Contagion" by Sneha Vinod. The movie played the scenarios that would follow at wake of an air born killer virus which is similar to our current state of events. The program had a final slot for dicussion as no webinar will be complete without it being a platform for sharing feedbacks from the audience as even the handful of insights brought up by someone can go a long way into assessing one's quality of performance. The webinar was rounded off with a soulful vote of sincere gratitude from Aishwarya Kuriakose (2nd pg).
