Freshers' Week- Goal Setting Day: Jima Joseph

 A motivational session  was held on 27 th August,   2020 at 7 pm for the  students  of BA English online. Fr Sabu Thomas focused  on goal setting. He gave some  beneficial points and 

 tips.The session  was very  much informative. During the session a beautiful video portraying the  struggle  of the fish to reach a ocean was  played. The fish who  was confined in a limited  space, saw the bigger  world  with the help of the television  in front  it. The fish got  out from it's comfort  zone  and going  through many  obstacles  finally  achieved  it's  dream. The story  of  the fish inspired  the  students to set a goal, make  decisions on the right  moment and not to give  up  while  facing obstacles. 

Some  students shared their  opinions  on the video. A few students  shared their  personal  experiences. The motivational  video  boosted the students. Students  were highly  delighted  as  the session was interesting, informative  and highly  motivational.It was a very  functional interactive session.  
After  the  session  the  students  felt much benefitted with such a good  time. At last a  few students shared their  feedback  on the session and    expressed their  sincere  gratitude Fr Sabu Thomas for his valuable time and motivational words.

Freshers' Week- Alumni Day- 25/08/2020: Nandana

 t was a matter of great contentment to take part in the alumni session of our English Dept. From the inception to the conclusion, it furnished us with a cluster of incalculable knowledge, basically regarded with the vast opportunities of Copy editing and English Literature.


               The meeting started by 7 pm with all the dignitaries including Fr. Sabu Thomas, Johnson Sir, Neenu Ma'am and our esteemed alumni congregated virtually. After the prayer and inaugural address by Neenu miss, Sabu Achan introduced the very special achievers of English dept, who initiated the best course of action to follow their passion and paved a way to utilise the scopes of this course in  the most skilful manner. Rajesh sir shared his experiences with SH college and portrayed how much effective was his internship and other curriculars in further studies. Ms. Maria Heena explained the tremendous chances to get to the root of copy editing, especially in setting up a firm of her own. Ms. Rose Mary felicitated us with the improvisations of teaching in Literature and finally, Ms. Bhanushree, who got a platform to do research in the most finest institutions of Oxford and Cambridge guided us to filter the best of prospects in enlightening our interests and devote it to the future. The session ended up with queries and responses, and a bunch of valuable feedbacks.

                 To conclude, it was a splendid day with many remarkable and productive interactions that accomplishes  our dreams to  find a space in the world of poetry and prose, research and story...Thanks to all the teachers for such a prominent and profitable conclave..

Freshers' Week- Family Day- 24th August 2020: Devika Saju

 24 August 2020 : Family Day was organised by the English department of Sacred Heart College on 24 August through Google Meet between 7 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. for sharing the hopes and expectation in choosing the English department of Sacred Heart College.   

          The session started with a prayer by Class Teacher Neenu Miss. The inaugural  speech was delivered by Neenu Miss. This was followed by a cordial interactive session between parents and teachers regarding the students. It allowed them to share time together and get to know each other. Parents were allowed to talk their hopes about their children. They were also asked why they selected B.A English and Sacred Heart College. 
         Parents introduced their children to everyone. Most of the parents spoke in an interesting manner. There were multi talented students. Students are from across Kerala. 
         The session provided an opportunity to know about them as well as their culture.
        Students were afraid about  classes in covid situation. They were also very anxious to meet the teachers and their classmates. In the nick of time, the Google Meet provided them a relief to their tensions. The session was very useful and made them relaxed.
        The very special day was flavoured by the positive energy of the teachers. The various programmes organised by the department helped the students to get closer to the college. Johnson Sir delivered Vote of Thanks. 
          The session proved to be the best example to show how we can change negative circumstances to positive environment. It was also the first time to organise such a Family Meet. 
"Let us hope to overcome the COVID situation soon."

THE BLISS OF FREEDOM- Independence Day Gathering: 15/08/2020


 

Freedom and independence are precious gifts send to mankind from the heavens above and the English department of Sacred Heart College ,Thevara  held an Independence day celebration on August 15th 2020 to celebrate and honour that divine blessing.  The program sparked off with a patriotic song played in guitar by Austin Saagi of IInd B.A English. Professor M.P Jose who is a retired faculty of the English Department of the college was invited as the chief guest. The presidential address was given by K.S Yedhusree of IInd BA English where she talks about how we should all stand united despite the differences we share.  Commander Rajesh Ramkumar, retired captain of Indian Navy was honoured during the function.  He used to lead 4 submarines and spoke about those experiences where one must be vigilant and share a sense of  comradery which was a really inspiring message.  Aarathi Palliyath of IInd BA English spoke about the lessons from the struggle for freedom that this generation should engrain within themselves to build a bright future for this country. George Joseph Sir, director of Labour India college Marangattupilly , and also the former HOD of Botany department of Sacred Heart College gave us the Independence day message asking us to contemplate if the idea of independence day has become a mere ritual or if we still remember the values we once fought for which was thought provoking . A thought for the day was given by Adhulkrishna R. Chandran of IInd BA English asking us to celebrate our freedom. K.M Johnson Sir , Head of the Department addressed the students and expressed his gratitude to the respected  guests and the program winded up with a final vote of thanks by Sneha of IInd BA English.The celebration made us remember the golden heritage of our country  and we all felt proud to be a part of India.

WEBINAR ON PANDEMIC LITERATURE: 01/08/2020


 

On August 1st, the English Department of Sacred Heart College conducted a webinar on "Pandemic Literature" putting forward the immense cultural impact literature has in these changing times . This auspicious occasion started with a prayer by Meghna K Nair (2nd ug), followed by Catherine Shaju's (2nd pg) welcome of the group which commenced the webinar. An official insight to this unique initiative was put forward by the moderator, Dr. Rajesh M and a few words from the wise, Dr. Rohit P addressed the students, sharing views on the endless genres and classics in literature. The paper presentations started off with Merin Rose's (2nd pg) illustration on how " The Plague" by Camus fit into the genre of pandemic literature and how the story is expressed from the point of view of an unknown narrator as he witnessed the plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran. Athira C.H (2nd pg) later explained the significance of pandemic literature in Chaucerian period followed by Merlin Mary (3rd ug) who used the aid of a Power Point presentation to demonstrate the the theories and content of "The Ghost Map" by Steven Berlin Johnson which told the story of the 1854 outbreak of cholera in Broad Street, London. The paper presentation wound up with a final presentation on the Steven Soderbergh movie "Contagion" by Sneha Vinod. The movie played the scenarios that would follow at wake of an air born killer virus which is similar to our current state of events. The program had a final slot for dicussion as no webinar will be complete without it being a platform for sharing feedbacks from the audience as even the handful of insights brought up by someone can go a long way into assessing one's quality of performance. The webinar was rounded off with a soulful vote of sincere gratitude from Aishwarya Kuriakose (2nd pg).
